Make Your Car a Safe Place To Be
Written By Joan Dolan
Many people don't intend on approaching dangerous situations when setting foot in a car. Accidents happen, sometimes in spite of careful and safe driving, but there are other hazards in cars that can hurt or even kill the driver and passengers.
Many safety tips are well known, some are regulated by law, and others are just common sense. Here are a few:
Put on a seat belt Seat belts are vital to the safety of drivers and passengers when riding in any vehicle.
Be Careful When Driving
Accidents can decrease if drivers take command of every situation they encounter on the road. Drive according to traffic laws to ensure everyone's safety.
Keep your eyes on the road
The only activities you should take part in while driving, is driving safely.
Child Car Seats
Properly secured safety seats and properly strapped in children help provide maximum security in a car.
Be prepared
There are a few items of importance that should be included in every car's safety kit: Spare tire and tools for a tire change, reflective gear, knife or seat belt cutter, and jumper cables. A fire extinguisher is good to keep inside the car too. When it is cold outside, it is important to have extra clothing items or blankets to keep you warm in case your car breaks down. Everyone should have a first aid kit in the car trunk too.
Safety tips that may save a life can be common knowledge, something every driver has learned, or something no one has every thought about. Apply these tips the next time you drive:
Flying objects
Unsecured items pose as a deadly threat if a car has to make a necessary impetuous jerk, turn or stop. Unsecured items are responsible for endangering the lives of many passengers.
Put parental locks on windows
Power window usage by eight children in the United States in 2004, resulted in them being choked. This bizarre accident happens when the child is leaning out a window and inadvertently presses on the power window switch. Parental locks are provided on the majority of cars. Use it, it will save fingers and hands too.
Never leave kids or keys, or both, in the car
Children can, and do, lock themselves in or let themselves out of cars. Losing control of the car is a huge possibility if you leave kids alone with the keys in a car. If the keys are in the ignition, they can start the car, causing it to move forward or backward, bumping other cars or people. Many children become locked in the trunk when unsupervised by a parent in a car. Leaving the keys in the car invites would-be thieves too.
Watch the temperature People are not cautious about abandoning their kids and pets in cars during hot weather. Cars get hotter than it is outside and can threaten the lives of children or animals left in the car. Hypothermia occurs quickly among those trapped in a cold car.
Even a small car equates to almost a ton of moving metal. Driving responsibly is the first step towards safety, but the driver needs to take every eventuality into consideration. Small things can make the difference, and we'd all rather be safe than sorry!
